The Boards of Governors at Wayne State and Oakland University will likely raise tuition at board meetings this week. Neither school is saying by how much they'll raise rates. At least not yet.

Oakland Press: Neither OU, where almost 20,000 students are enrolled, nor WSU, where at least 7,000 Oakland County students take classes, would release the percentage increase recommended this year.

WSU spokesman Thomas Reynolds said the proposed increases would not be released until the Board of Governors meeting. OU spokesman David Groves, said information would be online under “meeting agenda” at www.oakland.edu/bot sometime Tuesday, depending when it is finalized.

In 1987, annual tuition for an in-state undergrad Wayne State student was $1,862. Today, that same education costs $10,189.9.

To put that in perspective, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says $1,862 in 1987 is worth, adjusted for inflation, just $3,818.17 in 2013 dollars. It kind of makes you wonder what's up with that extra six grand and change, don't it?

UPDATE: Oh, hi. So Wayne State, where tuition has risen at more than double the rate of inflation over the last quarter-century wants to raise their prices by another 9.3%, which works out to about $900 per full-time student. In doing so, Wayne will forfeit about $500,000 in state aid.
