5+ Things To Do This Weekend

June 29, 2013, 6:17 AM

Watch A Band Called Death

This is not a concert, but a movie -- a documentary, to be specific -- about the world's first black punk band, called "Death," formed in 1971 by three brothers living in Detroit. The group was mostly a flop until they were rediscovered in the 2000's and hailed as a one-of-a-kind Detroit music legend. It's worth a watch even if you don't like death or punk. The music is catchy and easy to listen to and the film has gotten rad reviews nation-wide. (Even from people who aren't biased towards Detroit!)

Watch the trailer here. "A Band Called Death" is at the Birmingham 8 theater, or buy a digital copy here.

Eat, Drink And Dance At Jazzin' On Jefferson

It should be enough to say this event will have pop-ups and food trucks. The music and retail series began in early June at Jefferson and Chalmers on Detroit's east side, featuring an art gallery, coffee, grocer, historical displays, and more. Saturday events include sidewalk art for the younger ones, a biergarten for the older ones, and music for everyone.

The schedule is here.

Tour Palmer Park's Log Cabin

Built in 1885 by Palmer Park's namesake Thomas Palmer, this cabin opened for visitors for the first time in decades in 2012. The cabin originally served as the Palmer family's respite from bustling Detroit and now just sits looking pretty near Woodward and McNichols. Palmer, who owned the land that is now Palmer Park, originally tried to name the area Log Cabin Park, but it didn't stick.

Tour it Sunday.

Be Scottish For  A Day

The Highland Games in Lake Orion will have bagpipes, rugby, border collies, dancing, kilts, a parade of clans and all the other things you associate with Scotland. (If someone who goes could please fill me in on the intricacies of whatever the "DRSCDS" and "Knobby Knees" events are, I would greatly appreciate it.)

Check it out Saturday and Sunday.

Bonus: listen to music in New Center or Eastern Market, look at things you can't afford at Shinola's new Midtown store, and go hot air ballooning.
