Michigan Suburbs Alliance To Build Database Of Local Government Opportunities

June 28, 2013, 6:30 AM

On this week's podcast, Hayley Roberts from the Michigan Suburbs Alliance discusses the MSA's effort to increase milliennials' (that's people aged 18-35) involvement in local government.

"Millennials... are very underrepresented in local government. So, in Metro Detroit, for example, they're 23% of the population, they account for 29% of registered voters, yet they hold only 6% of board, committee and commission seats," said Roberts. "Access to information is a big barrier."

The Michigan Suburbs Alliance will increase access to that information by building an online database of available government positions, thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation.

"Frankly, we're shocked no one has done this yet," says Roberts.
