Updated: Masonic Temple Didn't File For Bankruptcy After All

A management group previously affiliated with the Detroit Masonic Temple has filed for bankruptcy, but not the owners, The Detroit News reports in correcting its initial article.

The News erroneously reported the owners of the venue filed for bankruptcy. The Masonic Temple Association, which owns the facility, has no involvement in the filing, according to Brad Dizik, a senior adviser to the owner’s board of directors. The Sunday bankruptcy filing was from the Detroit Masonic Temple Theatre Co.

Landmark status and a timely property tax bailout from Jack White don't translate into paying up to $500,000 in bills for Detroit's Masonic Temple.

A bankruptcy filing this week lists up to 49 creditors and assets of $50,000 or less, Tony Broiscoe reports in The Detroit News.

The Chapter 11 filing comes nearly a month after musician Jack White’s donation kept the historic venue from heading to the Wayne County auction block and follows a Jan. 16 lawsuit filed by Planet Stage Productions.

Planet Stage, a live-event production company, claims the Detroit Masonic Temple Theatre Co. owes more than $81,000 in gross ticket revenues for a Nov. 23 show. . . . Planet Stage alleges the temple’s management “confiscated and converted (its) money to fund its own operations or use for purposes.” . . .

The Masonic, as it’s been known by generations of Metro Detroiters, recently has faced financial setbacks. Last August, a notice by DTE Energy, which threatened to cut off gas and electricity, was posted on its southern entrance after missed payments.

In a donation that was anonymous until Temple executives thanked him, White kicked in $142,000 to pay back taxes to Wayne County.
