Fired Free Press Reporter Launches Investigative Website with Crime Lab Scoop

Steve Neavling is only one of several staffers who have left the Free Press in recent months.

But he is the only one who was fired. And he is the only one who has started a journalism website.

Neavling's site is called Motor City Muckraker," and the first "edition" contains a story about the ruins of the Detroit police crime lab, a story that Neavling originally broke while he was working as a city hall reporter for the Free Press.

Neavling reports today that crime lab that Police Chief Ralph Godbee pledged to guard from further problems is now open to trespass. Scrappers have begun removing metal, and the former elementary school is now a virtual mural for graffiti artists in historic Brush Park.
