A Windsor man was arrested Monday night for attempting to swim across the Detroit River after having had a few drinks.

Windsor Star: Windsor police said the man told his girlfriend he was going to attempt to swim across the river from Windsor to Detroit around 11 p.m. Monday.

He entered the water near Gladstone Avenue and the girlfriend called police when she could no longer see him swimming.

The Canadian and United States coast guards were dispatched and he was located an hour later about 500-yards off shore from the Riverfront Festival Plaza.

The swimmer was picked up unharmed but intoxicated and arrested for his transgressions against maritime law. Swimming across a river on an international border with heavy freighter traffic not only sounds especially reckless, but it violates the Canada Shipping Act.
