Primary Count, Take 2: State Board Meets Tuesday in Detroit

August 25, 2013, 9:16 AM

It's retry time Tuesday for tallying ballots from Detroit's mayoral primary three weeks earlier.

The four-member Board of State Canvassers meets at 10:30 a.m. at the Michigan government office building in Midtown to discuss about 18,000 uncounted write-in ballots, WWJ reports. The public meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. on the first floor of Cadillac Place, 3044 W. Grand Blvd.

Wayne County canvassers referred the ballots to the state because they were tallied numerically instead of with hash marks. The election has yet to be certified, though Benny Napoleon and Mike Duggan will face each other Nov. 5 in any event.

State Elections Director Chris Thomas says the markings issue isn't significant enough to disallow votes, and no voter should be disenfranchised because of a poll worker’s mistake.

Residents can speak for up to three minutes Tuesday by submitting an advance written request to elections@michigan.gov. Phone inquiries can be made to Lydia Valles (517) 241-4662.

Colleen Pero, a Republican, chairs the board. Other members are vice-chair Jeanette Bradshaw (Democrat), Norman Shinkle (Republican) and Julie Matuzak (Democrat).
