There were lots of guns shots in the city of Detroit in August, but the number of homcides dropped compared to the same period last year, according to the police department.

The department reported that there were 170 non-fatal shootings, plus 38 homicides. Last year in August, there were 43 homicides. The number of non-fatal shootings for August 2012 were not immediately available.

As of Sept. 2, there were 230 homicides in Detroit, down 8.4 percent from the 251 during the same period last year, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stevens.

Stevens attributed the drop in homicides to cooperation between citizens and police and help from state and federal law enforcement.

The news website Motor City Muckraker reported the shootings included:

A teenager killed over a $2 bet on the east side. A 12-year-old boy was struck by one of many bullets that tore through his home shortly before bedtime. A 27-year-old woman was shot on the west-over her Chevy Impala.
