A Fire Breathing Dragon At The DIA

September 13, 2013, 8:19 AM

A fire breathing dragon rumbled its way down Woodward Thursday night, stopped in front of the DIA and lit a sign on fire.

The dragon- called Gon KiRin- is a sculpture, made of metal, rubber, and lights mounted to the insides from a dump truck. Created by Detroit artist Ryan C. Doyle and Hong Kong artist Teddy Lo, Gon KiRin made his appearance to protest DIA artwork potentially being sold off during Detroit's bankruptcy.

Donna Terek reports the massive art-car appearing in front of the DIA around 9PM Thursday night, breathed its fire, and made a swift exit.

The stealth artists quickly drove the dragon away, leaving aides to snuff the flames with a fire extinguisher. Passersby stopped to snap pictures, and at least one observer expressed outrage at the action.

It wasn't long before sirens wailed and a fire truck arrived to shower the smoldering sign with water.

Doyle and Lo are two new names on a list of artists vocally opposing the art's appraisal and on a very short list of people who own fire breathing dragons.

Gon KiRin can also be seen driving around the streets of Detroit, at Detroit Maker Faire, Burning Man, ArtPrize, and other festivals.
