Low Winter Sun Ends Season One With A Bang

October 06, 2013, 11:09 PM

It sometimes felt like a slog, but Low Winter Sun wrapped up Sunday night with a strong two-hour episode. Read no further if you wish to avoid spoilers, because we're about to explain how the season one finale went down. And if you do read on, don't go complaining about spoilers. You've been warned.

Unable to handle the weight of his own deceit, Frank Agnew snapped. After blowing the whistle on old dirty cases, he clears out his bank account and appears headed for Germany via Detroit City Airport, but ends up at his ex-wife's place in Ann Arbor.

Internal Affairs Lt. Simon Boyd is still close to cracking the case against Agnew and Joe Geddes or was, until an unlikely suspect cops to the Brendan McCann murder and the two connected homicides: Sean Taylor, the wino former cop and ex-husband of The International's Maya.

Boyd, of course, isn't buying and presents his case to the Christine Beatty-like deputy mayor. But the politicians would rather let some wino take the fall then expose the rampant corruption in the police department's homicide unit, so Boyd is told to fly a kite. He doesn't take the news well, breaking down and repeatedly shouting "you know I'm right" to no one in particular.

Damon, meanwhile, finally kills Skelos, the Greek Godather, in a roadside assassination, only to meet a similar fate while hiding out in Flint. Rev. Lowdown didn't need another rival replacing Skelos.

The season ends with Agnew -- having been officially exonerated in the murder he committed and was investigating -- in Chicago making arrangement's for Katia's burial. She was the hooker he had the obsession with. Det. Joe Geddes murdered her in the previous episode.

And that's how it ends. They got away with it. But, assuming the show is renewed for a second season, it's hard to imagine Boyd giving up on proving Agnew and Geddes are the real killers. It's also an open question as to how honest cop Dani Khalil can continue working inside this corrupt unit, especially after helping Boyd with his investigation and confessing in front of Agnew that she wore a wire while talking to him.

Hopefully, we'll see that play out sometime in 2014.
