Gilbert's Dowtown Parking Garage Gets Covered In Murals

October 11, 2013, 8:00 AM

Dan Gilbert's downtown Detroit parking garage/retail space is getting final touches as it preps to open. That includes what seems like a hundred colors of paint from 27 different artists.

The 10-story Z-shaped structure, nicknamed “The Z,” is set to open in December. The 535,00-square-foot building will include 34,000 square feet of retail space, 1,300 parking spaces — and murals by artists from Detroit to Spain to the Ukraine and Switzerland.

The massive collection of murals in a collaboration between Bedrock Real Estate Services, the group responsible for Gilbert's building buying spree, and Library Street Collective, an art gallery located next to the Z.

The Z is the first downtown structure Gilbert has built from the ground up.
