Survivors Of 1982 Buhl Building Rampage Will Remember The Woman Who Died

June 07, 2012, 7:39 AM

Survivors and family members of victims of the Buhl Building incident of June 1982 will gather soon in a private ceremony to remember the attack and celebrate the  life of Eve August, a 24-year-old law clerk intern who died in the attack.

It will be 30 years ago Monday when Detroiter Robert Harrington, burst into a law office with a shotgun, pistol and jar of gasoline. He shot to death August and then started a fire. His actions injured — some critically — 38 others in an incident that created chaos on Griswold Street as police, fire and EMS braved the smoke and flames to perform rescues, some in perilous conditions.

Detroit News reporter Steve Pardo reports the August family helped create a scholarship fund in Eve's name shortly after her death with her alma mater, the Detroit College of Law. Lou August went to the Buhl building on a lark back in December. He met David Ottenwess, whose firm of Ottenwess Allman and Taweel currently resides in the building.

"When I heard the name, I recognized it immediately and asked him to come to the office to talk," Ottenwess told Pardo.

That was the start of the memorial service. It's not surprising that Ottenwess recognized the name. He was one of the first recipients of the Eve August Moot Court Scholarship.
