Detroit To Get Curbside Recycling, More Bulk Trash Pick Up, In 2014

November 15, 2013, 7:26 AM

Detroiters will soon get citywide curbside recycling, thanks to the two firms recently awarded contracts to take over garbage collection in Detroit. Curbside recycling is currently available in only a few Detroit neighborhoods.

The firms will also collect bulk trash biweekly instead of quarterly.

Tentatively starting May 1, Advance Disposal Services and Rizzo Environmental Services will split waste disposal duties in the city of Detroit. The two companies were chosen after Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr and his staff announced a bidding process for the 5-year contract earlier this year.

The deal is expected to save the city $6 million a year.

According to the Detroit News, final contracts will be negotiated in the next month.

When the transition is complete, officials said the city plans to sell its fleet of garbage trucks and use the proceeds to finance a blitz effort to clean up illegal dumping in city neighborhoods and school areas.
