Has Work Quietly Begun On The M-1 Rail Line Along Woodward?

Curbed Detroit's Paul Beshouri reports the first tangible evidence that the M1 Rail project is real is happening quietly along Woodward downtown.

Beshouri photographed construction workers late Tuesday night at the intersection of Woodward and Congress, working on what he says is the planned streetcar's heavy-duty utility systems, which need to be installed prior to laying track.

Woodward and Congress will be the M1's southernmost stop.

It's not the official, champagne-soaked groundbreaking we were promised would take place over the summer. It now looks like that party won't happen 'til spring, so we're savoring this photo. It isn't pretty, but it is the humble beginnings of Detroit's first streetcar system since 1956.
