Video: UM Students Take a Pure Michigan-Style Tour of Detroit

December 11, 2013, 4:18 PM by  Alan Stamm

Classwork meets classy videography in "Welcome to Detroit," a two-minute promotion (below) by four University of Michigan business students.

With a style that copies pays homage to the iconic Pure Michigan campaign in script, narration and soundtrack, the video for a marketing course "advertises" UM's new "Detroit Center Connector" bus service between Ann Arbor and five Detroit stops. The free Friday and Saturday shuttles began Oct. 5 "to deepen relationships between Detroit and the U-M community," as a UM official puts it

With that in mind, director/videographer Kristen Cleghorn and writer/narrator Colin Walbridge worked to translate "the goals of cultural exchange and gaining experiences off-campus" to an engaging ad about riders who "leave behind the comfortable and familiar" because "the impulse to discover is too tantalizing to resist."

By foot, People Mover and local bus, actors Haley Goldberg and Abby Pilarski see the Fox Theater, DIA, Greektown, Campus Martius, downtown shops and other attractions.

Music is by the Cinematic Orchestra, a British electronic group.

The project earned an "A" grade, Cleghorn tells Deadline Detroit in an email. See why.
