Dan Gilbert's Serman's Building Rendering Is Solid

January 07, 2014, 4:29 PM

Dan Gilbert and his Bedrock Associates have received a lot of well-deserved criticism for some of their garish design choices downtown.

It seems like Gilbert and company are taking that criticism to heart. Bedrock's design vision for the Serman's Building on Randolph looks pretty good, especially the rooftop deck and bar. You know the patio deck at Buffalo Wild Wings two doors down? The one with that ridiculous "PATIO" sign on it in case you thought it was a wedding chapel or tannery. Bedrock's rendering for Serman's is pretty much the exact opposite of that.

The folks at Curbed have just one suggestion, don't remove the building's iconic commercial mural.

Curbed: What happens to the old Serman's mural on the Macomb-facing wall? It's pretty unique, and allowing it to fade naturally seems like a worthy tribute to a business that stuck it out in downtown Detroit for 96 years.

Good idea, but either way the rooftop deck looks fantastic. Let's hope they make it happen.
