Bernard Kilpatrick Joins Son Kwame In The Federal Prison System

January 08, 2014, 8:54 AM

Bernard Kilpatrick, #45341-039, is behind bars for the next 13 months.

According to The Detroit News, KIlpatrick has checked himself into a Texas prison months after being sentenced on a single tax charge in Detroit’s historic corruption case.

The father of disgraced former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is being housed at FCI Seagoville — “a low security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp and a detention center,” according to its website — in Seagoville, Texas, near Dallas, which has been the Kilpatrick family base since they left Detroit.

Kilpatrick's release date of Feb. 2, 2015.

In October, Kilpatrick, 72, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on the tax charge after a jury failed to reach a consensus in March on whether Kilpatrick had participated in the most sweeping of the government's corruption charges. The jury convicted him only for failing to declare $180,000 in income.

But U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said during sentencing that evidence during the six-month trial showed Kilpatrick played an active role lining up clients and pocketing thousands for "consulting" work he rarely performed — and which was given to him solely because his son was mayor.

The prison, which has 2,128 inmates, is light security, but regimentation is rigid. Here are excerpts from the inmate handbook:

2. Walls will be cleaned daily, assuring that any spills are cleaned off the walls. Pay close attention to the corners
in order to prevent formation of cobwebs.

3. All beds are to be made daily, in a tight military style, with the blanket being the top cover. Extra blankets will be
neatly folded at the foot of the bed. Each inmate will place his institution issued folding chair on top of the bed.
The laundry bag will be permitted to hang from the bedpost, if the inmate’s assigned locker does not have an outside hook.

4. Authorized shoes must be neatly arranged underneath the bed with the toes pointed outward.

Kwame Kilpatrick remains in the federal prison in Milan.
