Wayne County Commissioner Kevin McNamara hopes to follow dad's footsteps.

Marion Walker of the Detroit Free Press writes McNamara, son of the late County Executive Ed McNamara, said he'll  announce he's running for his father's old job tonight at Wayne County Community College District’s Downriver campus.

“Currently, the county is broken. It needs to be reinvented,” he told the Freep Wednesday. “It was broken in the 1960s and it was broken in the 1980s. We’ve reinvented ourselves before.”

McNamara, 56,  was first elected to the Wayne County Commission in 2006.

He joins Westland Mayor William Wild, who recently announced his candidacy for the county executive seat.

It's still unclear whether Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano will seek re-election. His administration, which has been under FBI investigation,  has been plagued by corruption.

Some of his appointees have been convicted.

Ficano had sought a note from U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade saying that he was not the target of the investigation.

In an interview with Deadline Detroit last July, McQuade was asked about the letter, to which she responded:

"I don’t want to comment on that other than we are investigating all aspects of Wayne County and we don’t know yet where the evidence may lead us. So people should not infer anything positive or negative from that."

Whatever the case, candidates are sure to attack Ficano's administration during the campaign. -- Allan Lengel
