Detroit Next Home Of Award-Winning HopCat Brewery -- With 130 Beers On Tap

February 03, 2014, 12:47 PM

Restaurateur Mark Sellers tells the Grand Rapids Press Detroit will be site of the third HopCat, a popular craft beer bar in Grand Rapids and East Lansing that has been rated the third-best beer bar in the world by the Beer Advocate.

“It will be our largest one yet,”  Sellers, who opened original location opened in downtown Grand Rapids in 2008, tells Garrett Ellison.

The 11,000-square-foot Detroit HopCat will have 130 tap handles, making it the largest draft selection in Michigan when it opens in August. The address is yet to be announced, but Sellers said the bar would include a live music venue.

Sellers is currently raising money and seeking investors to take the chain beyond Michigan. He’s raised about $2 million so far and is looking for silent partners.

The bar has generated numerous craft beer industry accolades in its six-year history. This week, the Grand Rapids HopCat was named the No. 1 brewpub in the U.S. by RateBeer.com for the second time.

HopCat in Grand Rapids is dog friendly. According to its website, Bowser is welcome to accompany his master/mistress on the HopCat deck...within reason.

Here is the official HopCat dog policy:

You can however, bring your dog to join you on the deck! Friendly (but not overly friendly, if you know what I mean!) leashed dogs (and cats, if you're going to split fur about it) are welcome on our deck whenever it's open. We do ask that you use common sense;  if it's a hoppin' Friday night and you have a Mastiff...maybe you should leave The General home. Feel free to call ahead if you suspect we're slammed - dogs and leashes can create an obstacle-course for our staff, and I know you don't want your beer spilled!
