Thursday night on a fast-paced results show, "American Idol" cut its number of contestants down from 30 to 13. Among those 13, are three metro Detroiters.
Southfield's 16-year-old Malaya Watson was the first finalist announced, followed by Sam Woolf, a 17-year-old from Florida who grew up in West Bloomfield. After the 10 viewer-voted finalists were revealed, Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez were asked to choose five of the remaining contestants for a sing-off.
Jena Irene, 17 sang her original song, “Unbreakable Me” while playing on a digital piano. The performance earned the Farmington native rave reviews and a spot in the finals.
The contestants will be back next week. Tune in to Fox on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and vote to keep these Detroiters in the race to be the next American Idol.
