Scott Asheton, Drummer For Iggy And The Stooges, Is Dead at 64

March 17, 2014, 7:35 AM

Scott Asheton, founding member and drummer for proto-punk band Iggy and the Stooges, has died aged 64.

The cause of death is not known.

Brian McCollum writes in the Free Press that Asheton lived in Gregory Township, near Chelsea, and also had homes in Drummond Island and Sarasota, Fla.

Asheton’s brother, Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, died in 2009. Stooges front man Iggy Pop, who formed the band with the brothers in Ann Arbor in 1967, remembered the drummer in a Facebook post Sunday:

My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.

Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.

Iggy Pop is now the only surviving member of the original Stooges lineup, whose raucous work helped define Detroit’s rock identity while serving as a bridge between ’60s rock and the subsequent punk explosion.
