Michigan Ranks 3rd Worst in U.S. for Well-Being of African American Kids

Here's another national ranking Michigan should be alarmed about.

Charles Ramirez of the Detroit News reports that Michigan ranks third worst in the nation -- only behind Mississippi and Wisconsin -- when it comes to the well-being of African-American children.

A report, the Kids Count, to be released today, based its findings on 12 criteria, including normal birth weights, education of parents and the number of children living at or above poverty.

“For us to be third lowest in the country was pretty shocking,” Jane Zehnder-Merrell, director of the Kids Count in Michigan project at the Michigan League for Public Policy in Lansing, according to the Detroit News. “The country doesn’t look very good either.”
