Duggan Goes After Neglected Homes in Marygrove Neighborhood

April 09, 2014, 11:18 AM

Negligent home owners in the neighborhood surrounding Marygrove College may soon be in the Duggan administration's crosshairs, the Free Press reports.

As the city looks to rid itself of blight, the administration is focusing on the owners of 79 structures that are considered in good enough condition to save . Those owners could end up in court, the Freep reports,  if the city has to force them to "either fix up the properties and get them inhabited or risk losing them to the city and its Detroit Land Bank."

Matt Helms of the Freep writes:

The properties that aren’t fixed up would be sold at auction to people looking for homes, with preference for families or others looking to occupy the homes.

The Free Press quotes an anonymous Duggan official saying:

"Even the vacant homes in the neighborhood are in pretty solid condition, so they lend themselves to being rehabilitated rather than torn down.” --Danny Fenster
