Ripping off the city of Detroit seems all the more painful at a time like this.

Christine Ferretti and Darren A. Nichols of the Detroit News report that the state attorney general has charged 33 current and former Detroit city employees with unemployment fraud for allegedly collecting $400,000 in improper benefits.

The News reported that some defendants claimed unemployment benefits while working full-time for the city, while others collected benefits by claiming they were laid off when they weren't.

“We think it’s important that we deal swiftly and aggressively with people who steal the resources of the city of Detroit,” Detroit Inspector General James Heath said Thursday in an interview with the Detroit News. “Frankly, a $400,000 loss to the city is significant.”  - A.L.
