WXYZ-TV reports a gang of men beat a gay man along the Detroit RiverWalk Sunday, next to the Motor City Pride event, a gay and lesbian festival at Hart Plaza.

According to Jeff Vaughn, the video, taken by a bystander, shows 20-year-old Christin Howard fighting off five to eight attackers. Howard eventually ended up on the ground as the attackers viciously kicked and punched him.

Some bystanders appeared to be cheering on the assailants.

"He dropped him! He dropped him!" one members of the crowd can be heard saying. Few people appered to express support for Howard, though one woman on the tape tells one of the attackers to "chill."

Howard says the attack was unprovoked and that he was getting a picture taken with a friend when the young men started circling, commenting on his long hair, calling him homophobic slurs and threatening with violence.

Howard, who suffered bruises, an injured eye and a broken finger, said he believed at one point he might die.
