MSNBC's Ed Schultz: 'Hell, Detroit is on fire most of the time'

Before we get our hackles up about Ed Shultz’s comments, understand that while he’s obviously being a bit hyperbolic, this is not a flippant anti-Detroit broadside.

“Last year alone, the [Detroit] fire department fielded 30,000 fire calls,” Shultz said, quoting the documentary ‘Burn.’ “The city of 714,000 sees 30 fires a day. In contrast, Los Angeles, a city of 4 million, faces just 11 structure fires a day.”

Los Angeles is also 498 square miles whereas Detroit is 140 square miles. With nearly six times the population and between three and one-half times the physical space, LA sees about 1/3 the number of fires that Detroit experiences.

Hell, he’s right. We are on fire all the damn time. -- JTW
