Did 88-Year-Old Detroiter Shoot At Channel 7 Crew After He Was Beaten And Robbed?

July 14, 2014, 10:10 PM

An 88-year-old man who police say was tortured and beaten by a group of armed robbers last week was placed in handcuffs in the back of a Detroit police car Monday,  Fox 2's Maurielle Lue reports, after a shot rang out from his house when a WXYZ-TV news crew approached.

Confused and disoriented, he is a victim for a second time, Lue said in her report.

Update: On its 11 p.m. newscast Monday, WXYZ-TV's Jonathan Carlson reported the man fired one shot at him from his porch after Carlson asked the man through the front door if he would talk about the Thursday attack.

The shooting incident was not captured on camera.

The man, whose name was withheld, was beaten, tied up and robed at gunpoint Thursday evening when he was lured to the door by a woman asking for help. When he opened the door, two men rushed in.

Lue interviewed the man through his front door Monday. Later, the Channel 7 crew arrived. Lue and a videographer witnessed the WXYZ team running from the home, then heard a shot.

Police arrived and took the man to Detroit Receiving Hospital for a medical evaluation. He lives in a battered home on Arndt Street on Detroit's near east side. The house's windows are protected by bars -- even the windows on the second floor are secured.
