Is Mailer by Westland Mayor Bill Wild Intentionally Deceptive?

July 15, 2014, 6:46 AM

From outward appearances it looks pretty obvious that Westland Mayor Bill Wild is getting an endorsement from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan in his bid for the Wayne County Executive job.

Fox 2 reports that a mailer being sent by the Wild campaign has a picture of himself and Duggan side-by-side with the words: "As CEO Bill Wild Pledges to Work With Mayor Duggan to Turn Wayne County and Detroit Around."

Duggan, who has endorsed  one of Wild's opponents in the primary, ex-Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans, said: "I didn't think it was appropriate and we sent him a letter asking him to stop."

Wild obviously figured some might assume from the mailer that Duggan was endorsing him. Why else would he put a disclaimer on the back: "This mailer is not intended to imply Mayor Mike Duggan's endorsement."

Mmmm. Interesting.

Wild defended the mailer, telling Fox 2:

"I think what I was trying to say, and this is a major part of my platform, is that my plan to turnaround Wayne County is working with Mayor Duggan as he turns around the city of Detroit." -- Allan Lengel
