Dirty Tricks or Politics As Usual? 2 Republicans Secretly Taped Schauer Fundraiser

July 16, 2014, 4:17 PM

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer could take it as a compliment that the Republicans are worried enough about Gov. Rick Snyder getting re-elected that they're resorting to spying on Schauer's activities.

Chad Livengood of the Detroit News reports that for the third time this year, the Schauer camp is accusing GOP operatives of spying on the campaign. This time it involves a young woman and man who did the spying.

Livengood writes:

Schauer’s campaign and Oakland County Democrats recently came into possession of a tiny disk containing raw video footage of a young woman and man who secretly recorded a Schauer campaign fundraiser June 22 at a private home in Bloomfield Hills.

Livengood reports that Republicans are defending the spying, saying tracking and recording words and actions of opposing candidates isn't anything new.

“Republicans do it; Democrats do it,” Darren Littell, communications director for the Michigan Republican Party, told The Detroit News. “People use different ways to get the footage. ... This is a newer approach.”

The Dems have taken the raw footage and made a video mocking the two spies.
