Six Months After WDIV Report, Detroit Children Still Sharing Sidewalks With Hookers

July 21, 2014, 6:01 AM

Prostitution may not be the crime of the century, particularly in a city where violence is so pervasive.

Still, when children --some waiting for the summer school bus -- are constantly exposed to it, it takes on a greater sense of urgency -- or so you would think.

WDIV's Kevin Dietz reports six months after he delivered a report on children sharing sidewalks with prostitutes on John R between McNichols and 8 Miles Road, nothing has been done by police to end the problem.

Police told WDIV six months ago they would deal with the issue. But Dietz reports the problem is only getting worse.

WDIV shows kids waiting for buses for summer school,  sharing sidewalks with hookers.

"It's a zoo out here," says one parent. Another says her daughter doesn't like to come outside because of it.

Dietz reports that this time around, when cameras came out and a police patrol car drove by, the prostitutes left, only to return in a few hours.

Dietz went on WDIV's Facebook page Sunday night to discuss the issue with viewers.

Dietz post this: If the customers knew they were being videotaped and put on line do you think they would stop?

One viewer, Julie Smith Fields, post this:  That is what I just posted. Many of these men are the internet cowards who bash the city on a regular basis. Let their families and bosses know what they are up to in Detroit and I'll bet it stops! How would the customers feel if their children were seeing this on a daily basis? And people wonder why these children grow up like they do. What are the parents to do if the police have given up?
