It's been happening for many years.

Police department in suburban Detroit and around the country have been recruiting seasoned Detroit cops to come work for them for better wages and often better conditions.

But WDET's Quinn Klinefelter reports that as the city moves through bankruptcy, police departments outside of the city are increasingly trying to recruit Detroit cops, who often work for lower wages.

"The city of Detroit police department has become a training ground for other municipalities, other law enforcement entities, because of the level of crime that our officers actually handle,"  Mark Diaz, head of the Detroit Police Officers Association.

Detroit police had paychecks cut by 10 percent two years ago. There's talk of raising salaries. But that may not be enough for some Detroit cops to stick around.

WDET reports that departments from Texas to Toledo are taking notice and trying to recruit.

The station reports that a Detroit, patrol officer's salary tops out at about $47,000 a year, which is a bit more than the starting salary of cadets in Houston.
