A 20-year-old man identified by neighbors as an active-duty National Guard soldier just returned from duty in Iraq was killed Monday night in a carjacking outside a market on Rutland near Schoolcraft on Detroit's west side.

WDIV-TV's Tim Pamplin reports the victim's military background, and says he ended up on the roof of his Pontiac Grand Am with tinted windows during the struggle, and one of the carjackers shot him through the car's sun roof.

The Detroit News Mark Hicks reports the man’s car was later recovered on the west side; investigators are processing it for fingerprints.

The News reports in the first half of 2014, Detroit recorded 30 percent fewer carjackings than in the same period last year, which Police Chief James Craig attributed to better police work and criminals' reluctance to prey on citizens who might be armed.
