So Long Mumford High: Demolition Crew Making Room for New $52 Million Campus

Back in the day, Mumford High School in Detroit got some national recognition when Eddie Murphy's character Axel Foley wore a Mumford High phys ed t-shirt in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop."

Well, the movie has come and gone.

And now, the same can be said for the old Mumford High School.

The Detroit Free Press reports that wrecking crews today were continuing to tear down the old school to make way for a new $52 million campus, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

The Free Press reports that the Art Deco building was first constructed in 1949 in northwest Detroit along Wyoming Avenue near 7 Mile Road. The new school will sit on the the athletic fields of the old school.

Axel Foley would be pleased with the new structure.
