Detroit restaurants continue to get recognition from national and international publications.
The latest: National Geographic, with a global circulation of 6 million-plus, includes Detroit in an article headlinedd "6 Unexpected Cities for the Food Lover." Nancy Gupton writes:
Wait, Detroit? Yes. The city better known as a center for automakers and manufacturing is revving its culinary motors.
Corktown and downtown suggestions include Brooklyn Street Local, the Dime Store, Onassis Coney Island , Slows Bar BQ "for beef brisket and pulled pork" and Katoi.
For ethnic food, the article cites New Parthenon and other Greektown tavernas. In Hamtramck, it recommends the Polish Village Café and Krakus.
In Dearborn, Al Ameer gets a shout as "popular for its shawarma, falafel and hummus." Sheeba and Hamido also are worth checking out, the magazine tells readers.
In Detroit's Midtown, Grey Ghost, La Feria and Selden Standard get the nod.
The other five "unexpected cities" as food destinations are Budapest, Hungary; Yerevan, Armenia; Santiago, Chile; Dakar, Senegal; and Wellington, New Zealand.
