For years, the deteriorating Silverdome in Pontiac has stood as a symbol of what was -- and what could have been.

The Detroit Lions played there from 1975-2001 until they returned home to Detroit. The Detroit Pistons played there from 1978-88 until they moved to Auburn Hills.

The stadium brought hope for Pontiac. Then in time, it did not.

Now, after many years of decay, demolition is finally about to begin in three weeks, reports Natalie Broda of The Oakland Press:

Environmental remediation is nearly complete on the site, with the crew tearing out asbestos panels that were used in a majority of the suites around the perimeter of the dome, along with completing universal waste removal.

The structure is expected to be flattened by January.
