A Monroe County judge has trouble -- hooker problems to be exact.

First District Judge Jarod Calkins, who is married and has young children, was arrested on prostitution charges Friday following a lengthy investigation alleging that he paid women to have sex in a hotel, reports Ray Kisonas of The Monroe News.

Calkins, 41, of Carleton, was arraigned before a colleague, who set bond at $25,000 personal recognizance. The district's judges then disqualified themselves from further proceedings, and Calkins was placed on paid administrative leave.

Fox 2 reports that he met women on line, and used an electrical device to shock them.

He faces five counts of prostitution, including one felony charge of causing a person to be transported across state lines for the purpose of prostitution, the paper reports.

Calkins was arrested, but not handcuffed, in his office at the Monroe County Courthouse and escorted across the hall to Bronson’s court by members of the Attorney General’s office and Michigan State Police. The Michigan State Police received reports of prostitution-related activities at the hotel and opened an investigation.

“Public officials must be held to a higher standard, and I will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that we hold accountable anyone who violates the public trust,” Attorney General Bill Schuette says in a statement. “I applaud the work done by the Michigan State Police and my Public Integrity Unit who put a stop to activities that violate the public trust.”
