Update, 2:45 p.m Tuesday: Results of a late poll by Mitchell Research Communications are revised Tuesday to show that two key state races are closer than first reported.

On Monday, the poll showed Gretchen Whitmer leading Bill Schuette by 14 points, 54-40, and Sen. Debbie Stabenow ahead of challenger John James 53-46.

But Tuesday, pollster Steve Mitchell said a second look at the data showed Whitmer leading Schuette by only 8 points, and James trailing Stabenow by 3 points. the margin of error is 3.41 percent.

Such revisions make us even more skeptical of these surveys.

Original post, Tuesday morning:

A late poll released Monday, shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer with a commanding 54-40 percent lead over her GOP opponent Attorney General Bill Schuette.

The statewide poll conducted by Mitchell Research Communications also shows that Democratic incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow leads GOP challenger John James by 53-46 ;percent. The poll has an error margin of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

“Whitmer and Stabenow are poised to win on Tuesday,” concludes pollster Steve Mitchell.

“John James is surging as the election approaches tomorrow. All Republicans lost steam as a result of the pipe bomber and the shooting in Pittsburgh. Although they are getting momentum back, it seems out of reach for Bill Schuette and a difficult road for James, despite his surging poll numbers. In the year of the women, both Gretchen Whitmer and Debbie Stabenow are very strong with women voters."
