The Free Press reports the newly hired -- this is his first season in the job -- team employee is battling metastatic bile-duct cancer, which has spread to his liver and lungs.
Allen's friends have set up a GoFundMe page, seeking to raise $50,000 to "help ease the burden of the medical costs" Allen and his wife, Lisa Swieringa, are about to incur. More than $3,800 was raised from over 60 donors as of Thursday afternoon.
Allen lives in Grand Rapids and commutes to Detroit for home games. He is 59.
