A man suspected of killing two family friends died this weekend in a shootout with Detroit police officers.

Two officers were investigating near a home on Woodlawn near Erwin on Saturday, the department told WXYZ. Suddenly, an unknown man ambushed them with gunfire and the officers shot back, killing the man, the force added.

Neither officer was injured. The officers detained two other suspects.

Redford police identified the victim as Louis Veal, 65, according to The Detroit News reported. He is a suspect in a Redford double-homicide this month, police say. Lysa Blake, 18, and 49-year-old Dania Phillips were murdered after an argument over an asthma inhaler. The two women both knew Veal, and the shooting took place in his home, police said.
