Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles, a popular Southern soul food restaurant on Livernois Avenue in Northwest Detroit, reopens Saturday at 9 a.m.

The restaurant, which first opened in 2015, closed last summer for major renovations.

“Don’t call it a comeback, we’ve been here for years," said owner Ron Bartell in a statement.

“It’s been a journey since I closed the restaurant back in August of 2019, for some much-need renovations to the kitchen, front-of-house deep cleaning, improvements in our standard operating procedures, and review – with an eye on improving our customer service through talent acquisition and refined staff training methods.

"From the restaurant’s exterior, to the bar and dining area, things will look the same. However, the back-of-house in the kitchen is where significant improvements were made with an investment of nearly $350,000. Kuzzo’s has a new kitchen, with all new equipment -- some of which were custom designed for how we prepare and dredge our chicken before we fry it; and a waffle irons station that now supports seven waffle irons cooking at once."

Realizing that the opening comes at a time of concern about the coronavirus, the restaurant at 19345 Livernois, between Outer Drive West and Cambridge Avenue emphasizes, that it's partnering with food delivery services -- Urber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Black and Mobile, a new black-owned food delivery service in Detroit.
