March 16, 2020, 11:42 AM

While cafeterias and classrooms are closed until April 6, perhaps longer, Detroit schools begin serving carry-away breakfasts and lunches Wednesday at 58 schools listed below.

The district with nearly 52,000 students also will hand out home-study materials to feed young minds.

Chalkbeat Detroit has details and context:

The free meals are crucial for many Detroit students who rely on school lunches as their daily nutrition source. Close to 86% of Detroit Public Schools Community District students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

“Grab-and-go” breakfasts and lunches will be available starting March 18. Breakfast will be offered between 8 and 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The students will not be allowed to go inside the buildings, and the district also plans to deliver meals at home to students who are medically fragile.

"During the three-week school closure, all central office staff, principals, assistant principals, cafeteria workers, police and security will report to work," says a district statement, which adds that learning packets will have math, English, arts, science and social studies by grade levels.

In addition, the lessons will be available through Clever, a mobile application. Students in grades 8-12 will have access to Khan Academy to complete lessons in preparation for PSAT/SAT, and PSAT/SAT workbooks will also be available at the 58 sites.

In addition, K-8 students will have access to reading materials through myON. iReady will be available for grades K-8 reading and math lessons.

The Homework Hotline is available to families and students, Monday-Friday between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m. For academic support, please call (833) 466-3978. Students and parents can find additional academic resources at www.detroitk12.org/covid19.
