Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones is mounting a primary bid for Detroit Rep. Rashida Tlaib's Congressional seat, she announced Wednesday.
Jones filed a statement of candidacy for the 13th Congressional District seat with the Federal Election Commission last week, according to a document obtained by political tracking website Poltics1.com.
Volunteers were earlier this month seen collecting petition signatures on Jones' behalf, though as of early last week no signatures had been submitted to Wayne County clerk, a spokesperson for the elections division told Deadline Detroit.
A representative for Jones could not immediately be reached for comment.
Jones ran for the seat in 2018 and came in close second in the primary despite raising little money and doing little campaigning. She did win the race to cover the balance of former Rep. John Conyers' term. Both openings were on the ballot, and may have confused some voters.
It's unclear what the coronavirus outbreak, which could keep people indoors until summer, would mean for a campaign. The primary is Aug. 4.
Political prognosticators predict Tlaib, now a household name throughout the country, will be more difficult to beat this time around.
