Two more notable individuals are reported to have died from COVID-19 Friday afternoon.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says deputy Dean Sevard, 51, and a 16-year veteran of the force, died today at Garden City Hospital. Sevard was tested for coronavirus March 23 and the test was confirmed positive March 27, when he was hospitalized. The deputy was married.

Michigan Radio reports that a nurse at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Lisa Ewald of Dearborn, also died this week, after testing positive.

Ewald told her neighbor, Alexis Fernandez, that she believed she was exposed to the virus around March 24, when she interacted with a patient who later tested positive for coronavirus. Fernandez says Ewald immediately tried to get tested herself, but was told by her employer that she couldn’t get a test until she started showing symptoms.

“The fact that they wouldn’t test her, she was back and forth [to the hospital twice] trying to get a test. She was sicker than a dog and it took forever to get the results," Fernandez said.

Ewald apparently died at home; Fernandez said she and another HFHS nurse, who was sent on a welfare check, let themselves in with a spare key and found her body.

A coworker described Ewald as "a compassionate nurse with topnotch instincts born of years of experience." She was 54.
