Readers share plague masks that also are fashion accessories

Karen Dumas (top), Paddy Jones (left) and Katie Baker show how to be distinctive while staying safe.

A handful of Deadline Detroit devotees accept our invitation to show what they wear outside quarantine these days.

Noses and mouths should be covered, but the new look needn't be drab or generic. Gretchen Whitmer didn't sign an executive order requiring socially undistinguished facewear, after all.

"Self-expression lends itself to any blank canvas," Berlin journalist Graeme Campbell posts Monday at a style site called High Snobiety. "It goes without saying that some masks are cooler than others."

Shannon Haag recently made 35 "lovingly sewn masks for friends and family."

So no white painter's masks or pale blue surgical wraps for these local stylists, nuh-uh. They recognize this don't-leave-home-with-out thing as a fashion accessory, just as scarves, eyeglass frames and hairstyles are a chance to show personality and flair. (OK, maybe not hairstyles right now.)

We hope these inspire you to also show how you put a distinctive face forward at a time unlike any other. Drop a selfie at our Facebook or Twitter page, or email one to admin@deadlinedetroit.com.

And remember, let's be careful out there.

It should be week four of baseball season, so Barbara Blumenfeld and Shannon Haag (right) put their team loyalty where their breathing is.
