Glimmers of light are amid the dark numbers of Michigan's daily pandemic statistics.

Relatively few new deaths are reported so far this week (26 today and 12 Monday) and nearly 33,200 people who had Covid are classified as recovered – 60% of all confirmed cases.

And yet, more families continue to be shaken by a scary diagnosis and tragic losses. The statewide death rate from the lung virus is 10% of confirmed cases, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Tuesday afternoon's updated tally adds 223 cases for a total of 55,104 since March (including recoveries). The number of new cases is the second-lowest in a week, rainking behind Monday's 202 cases.

The new cumulative count exceeds the population of Battle Creek by nearly 4,000.

Lung virus fatalities now stand at 5,266, nearly as many people as live in the city of Grosse Pointe.

Detroit and the rest of Wayne County have 36% of Michigan cases (19,926) and 45% of the deaths (2,368).

Another data point: State prisons account for 3,305 cases (6%) and 64 deaths.
