Macomb County is digging deep to find the coronavirus.

The project, funded by federal dollars, is creating seven sample collection sites in Clinton Township. Samples at each site will be collected twice per week and sent to sent to Oakland and/or Michigan State univerisities for testing. Testing begins in June.

If successful, the program could be expanded to other parts of the county.

“Providing information not only to our medical professionals, but to the public as well, is foundational to fighting this disease," said Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller in a statement.

"We believe there is a real opportunity here to be a part of the solution and we are working as quickly as we can toward that goal. This ability to detect potential hotspots will be critical as we re-open our ecomony."

She said the testing could help make contact tracing more effective in the county.
