The city of Detroit records about 20 fresh Covid cases a day. About half of new patients testing positive are of people who show no signs of illness, the city's health director said Thursday.

Dr. Denise Fair disclosed those statistics at a press conference, and went on to say about 20 percent of the newer cases involve people in their 20s -- "much higher than what we've seen to this point."

A top World Health Organization official on Tuesday said that scientists have not determined yet how frequently people with asymptomatic cases pass on the disease, a day after the orgnanization suggested that such spread is “very rare."

Some young people show lax concern about catching the disease, believing the odds of dying are far less for them than elderly people or those with medical conditions.

Dr. Fair did not elaborate on some of the test results when announcing the statistics. But the fact that more asymptomatic cases are being discovered could be attributed to the fact an increasing number of people without symptoms are getting routinely tested as tests become more readily available.

Tthe city confirms 11,294 cases of Covid and 1,416 deaths since mid-March. Some reports suggest fatalities around the country are underestimated because some people have died without being tested.
