Sammy Davis Jr. (1967) and Allee Willis

You may know of the late Allee Willis, a colorful native Detroiter and creator of "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire and the theme song for the sitcom "Friends." She attended Mumford High School in Detroit, went to college in Wisconsin and eventually moved to LA, where she won two Grammy Awards and was inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She died a year ago at age 72.

There are plenty of amusing stories about her. Here's one we hadn't heard.

Ethan Davidson, a musician and son of the late Bill Davidson, owner of the Detroit Pistons, writes on Facebook how Willis ended up with the late Sammy Davis Jr.'s last stash of weed. Davis was a singer, actor and a member of the "Rat Pack," a group of entertainers in the 1960s that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Peter Lawford. Davis, who had one glass eye, died in 1990 at age 64.

Davidson posts:

Why I can no longer be impressed:

A couple of years ago, Gretchen and I were visiting our friend Allee Willis, at her LA home / 'museum of kitsch.'

Allee pulls out her "most cherished treasure": it was a tiny little cardboard box.

"This belonged to Sammy Davis Jr," she said, "Don't worry, it's not his eyeball!"

She opened the box, and inside was Sammy Davis' last stash of weed, with a hand written note: "Dear Allee, hang onto my weed, Love, Sammy."

I don't care how cool you might think you are, but only Allee had Sammy's last stash.

Allee always wins!!

We miss you! Say hi to Sammy!
