Coochie-coochie-coo: Meet Metro Detroit's first babies of 2021, who wisely waited out 2020

January 02, 2021, 7:40 AM

First-baby stories are a journalism tradition, a way to help fill the holiday pages and air time with good news on a day when many readers are hungover and more interested in football. Like the baby who traditionally boots Father Time out at midnight, they represent new hope and fresh starts, even if their parents will have to wait another year before claiming them as a tax deduction.

This year's New Year babies, introduced by the various health systems in the metro area, are a girl, Gia Rose Nicoletti, born at Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn; a boy, Dean Itani, debuting at Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield; a boy, Logan Mallison, checking in at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland; and in the city of Detroit, at the Detroit Medical Center, Juelz Marquis Bannerman, a masculine child, as they say in "The Godfather."

All are cute and cuddly, and all no doubt have that irresistible fresh-from-the-womb smell, but we're going to use Gia's photo, for a number of reasons: She's the only girl; that bow on her head is a cuter way to say "girl" than the usual pink stocking cap; and having checked in at 12:42 a.m., she is truly the first of the crop, even though she was born in Dearborn, not Detroit.
