Newly minted Michigan Congressman Peter Meijer carried on the tradition of fiercly independent Grand Rapids Republicans. He replaced Congressman Justin Amash, who bailed from the GOP in 2019 and subsequently voted to impeach President Trump. Their House seat was held by Gerald Ford from 1949-73.

On Wednesday, Meijer was amoing 10 Republicans voting to impeach the president.

He also put decency ahead of party when impatient Republican members got angry about suddenly having to pass through metal detectors to reach the House floor.

Punchbowl News reports that he told Capitol Police officers: “I am sorry some of my colleagues are being assholes.”

The two-week-old politics newsletter founded by three Politico defectors, posts:

Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan continues a trend of really interesting Republicans from the Grand Rapids area -- Meijer’s predecessor was Justin Amash. This district seems to reward people who don’t fall in line with the party.

Also, Meijer’s family owns the massive Meijer supermarket chain in the Midwest, so he has the personal resources and name ID to withstand attacks.
